The Centre of Contemporary Arts Cairns (CoCA) is a significant piece of Queensland Government regional arts infrastructure, and is located at 96 Abbott Street. The venue consists of The Theatre, a 241 seat black box theatre, The Space, a large open plan rehearsal and performance venue, two A-Class galleries, KickArts Gallery Shop, meeting and workshop facilities, as well as Paradiso Cafe and theatre bar number 96. CoCA is also home to resident AQ-funded companies JUTE Theatre Company and KickArts Contemporary Arts, as well as partnering with End Credits Film Club to provide the ongoing contemporary cinema program, Unseen Cinema. Through the Fresh Ground program, the Centre also provides space and facilities to several established and emerging companies in Far North Queensland including: Bonemap Intermedia, Biddigal Performing Arts, The Centre for Australasian Theatre (CfAT), Baiwa Dance Company and Courageworks.
In 2015 – 16, with support from The Australia Council for the Arts, the centre is partnering with AusDance Queensland to deliver the New Move Network dance strategy designed to sustain, innovate and connect and develop dance practitioners and audience in the Far North. This will be achieved through the presentation of works, innovative residencies open to national practitioners, workshops and education and dialogues.
Based at CoCA, Arts Cairns is Arts Queensland’s direct representation in the north of the state, and was born from the amalgamation of the former Cairns Regional Office (CRO) and CoCA in 2014.The Arts Cairns team are responsible for Arts Queensland's program delivery and infrastructure management in Cairns and Far North Queensland.
