David Lynch exhibition opens at GOMA

The largest retrospective of works by acclaimed American artist and filmmaker David Lynch opens at Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) this weekend.

Queensland Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk said David Lynch: Between Two Worlds was showing exclusively at GOMA from tomorrow (14 March) to 7 June.

“The exhibition, featuring more than 200 works spanning five decades, is an unprecedented opportunity to consider Mr Lynch’s entire creative vision across art, cinema and music,” the Premier said.

“It’s an honour that Mr Lynch has chosen to work with GOMA to bring his work to Australia for the first time.

“This reinforces the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art’s reputation for curating exhibitions with the world’s foremost artists and enhances Queensland’s reputation as a destination for major cultural events.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the cultural industries generated revenue and jobs for Queenslanders, with more than 83,000 Queenslanders already make their living in a cultural occupation.

“My first priority for Queensland is jobs and world-class exhibitions have a significant economic flow-on.

“This is yet another example of the value of past Labor Governments’ $291 million investment in the Millennium Arts Project, which gave us GOMA.”

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said the exhibition, developed closely with the artist, would surprise audiences with works that have never been seen in Australia.

“Alongside his esteemed career as a filmmaker, Lynch has produced an extraordinary body of painting, photography, printmaking, industrial design, music and moving image works. Visitors can expect to discover nightmarish evocations of the mundane and a surrealist appreciation of decay,” said Mr Saines.

“The exhibition includes the imposing installation of a replica living room, inspired by a small drawing by Lynch and first realised for the artist’s retrospective at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris.

“It is a space in which the viewer enters into the artist’s imagination in the most experimental of ways.”

As part of QAGOMA’s mission to make art accessible to audiences across the state, Lynch will host a Master Class for local students during the opening weekend which will be broadcast to 11 regional and remote venues.

The exhibition is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Tourism and Events Queensland.
