Kong: Skull Island audiences go ape over Queensland locations

Kong: Skull Island filmed in Queensland in 2016 – at Village Roadshow Oxenford studio and on location at Mt Tamborine’s rainforest and South Stradbroke Island.

Hollywood director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was wowed by the beaches of South Stradbroke Island which featured in the film’s opening.

“The sand dunes [were] one of the most amazing locations of the whole shoot,’’ he said in an interview for The Courier-Mail (9 March 2017).

The hinterland rainforest at Mt Tamborine also made an impression. “Queensland’s jungles have a unique and beautiful vibe,” he said. “There was something about the space between the trees which reads so beautifully on film…and we had one of the best crews I’ve ever worked with in my entire life.”

Queensland’s unique locations helped Screen Queensland secure the production, which spent more than $24 million in Queensland and created local jobs.

Over $203 million was spent in Queensland during the 2015-16 financial year from direct investment by domestic and international productions including Kong: Skull IslandThor: Ragnarok, The Shallows, Jungle, Nest with money spent on wages, goods and services.  In addition, there were 3154 direct jobs created by productions supported by Queensland Government investment through Screen Queensland.
