Queensland’s performing arts success celebrated at the Matildas

Queensland Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch has congratulated nominees and recipients of the 2017 Matilda Awards after attending the performing arts awards ceremony at Brisbane Powerhouse this evening (6 February).

“The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support the Matilda Awards, which acknowledge the wonderful work of our performing arts community,” Ms Enoch said.

“Queensland’s performing arts sector is an extension of our state’s cultural vibrancy, and events like the Matilda Awards provide us with the perfect opportunity to celebrate these talented creatives.

“The quality and diversity of productions and performances presented year in, year out demonstrates the calibre of arts in this state.

“As the new Queensland Arts Minister, I was delighted to present the top award, the Gold Matilda, to Brisbane company Playlab, who have been recognised for their outstanding contribution in supporting the theatre industry in our state.

“The company’s support of artists through the development, production and publication of work is to be commended,” she said.

Matilda Awards Chair Deb Wilks said the quality and talent of this year’s nominees was outstanding.

“Collectively, they tell an amazing story of the depth, variety, commitment and strength of the Queensland arts sector,” Ms Wilks said.

“The awards ceremony was once again a fantastic celebration of our industry. It’s always exciting to recognise the talent that’s in our own backyard.”

In addition to the Gold Matilda, 16 other awards were presented, including best productions in the categories of mainstage, independent, musical or cabaret, and circus or physical theatre, along with individual awards for the best new Australian work, director, emerging artist, and leading and supporting female and male actors.

The best achievements in design categories such as best set, costuming, lighting, sound and audio visual, were also recognised at the event.
